Tsunami Earthquake Mexico Will Loom 8 Countries in Three HoursResidents in the vicinity of offshore Mexico and seven other countries were asked to evacuate immediately after the earthquake with magnitude 8.1 on the Richter Scale shook. The tsunami warning center, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA, said tsunami waves were expected to arrive and hit the coast about three hours after the quake.

Eight countries are expected to be hit by tsunami waves, including Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador. It is estimated that a tsunami wave height of 0.3 to one meter is expected to hit Cook Islands, Ecuador, Fiji, eastern Polynesia, Guatemala and Kiribati. According to The Guardian, initial waves have been recorded in Mexican cities such as Salina Cruz, Puerto Madero and Huatulco, between 0.3-0.7 meters above the tide.

While waves below 0.3 meters are estimated to occur in countries as far as Australia, Japan and Vietnam. The warning center said the tsunami threat in Hawaii is still under evaluation. Earlier in its official website, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake occurred at 04:49:21.
