Tornado Czech Republic & Miami Condo Collapse
A rare strong and deadly tornado struck several villages in the Hodonín and Břeclav districts of the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic in the evening of Thursday, 24 June 2021. An extreme storm including a tornado and big hailstones devastated several villages, killing at least five people and injuring more than 200 others.
The final number of fatalities is still unknown. It was one of the strongest tornadoes ever witnessed in the country, with the Vyšehrad tornado of 1119, as its wind speed reached at least F3 levels on the Fujita scale. Some meteorologists including Petr Münster, who conducted an investigation at the site of the disaster claims that many buildings show signs of F4 or F5 intensity on the Fujita scale. Three other tornadoes (two rated F1 and one rated F2) were also confirmed in nearby areas just over the borders in Poland and Bohemia.
Miami Condo Collapse
The small Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida was rocked by tragedy early Thursday morning when a 12-story condo building partially collapsed. Seventy of the 130 units in the Champlain Towers South condominium were damaged or destroyed in the collapse. Several survivors have been pulled from the rubble, including a young boy, according to local reports. Footage from a nearby surveillance camera shows the horrifying moment that the majority of the building was reduced to rubble. Without warning, a middle section of the building crumbles, sending a plume of dust billowing into the air. Moments later, a second portion of the structure collapses on itself. Officials report that one person has been confirmed to have died, but that number is likely to rise. One witness, Nicolas Fernandez, described desperately trying to locate family friends who lived in the building.
