Emma Coronel Aispuro born July 3, 1989 is a Mexican former teenage beauty queen and wife of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, once Mexico's most-wanted man. Coronel met Guzmán in 2006 at a party hosted by her father. They wed on July 2, 2007, in a sparsely attended ceremony surrounded by armed security guards. In the summer of 2012, Coronel traveled to Lancaster, California, to give birth to twins at Antelope Valley Hospital. Guzmán's name was left off the children's birth certificates because the U.S. Department of State was offering a bounty of five million dollars for his capture. In a 2016 Telemundo interview conducted by investigative reporter Anabel Hernández, Coronel argued that the life of her husband was in danger and begged for justice on his behalf.
Coronel entered the 2007 Coffee and Guava Festival beauty pageant in Canelas, Durango. Each contestant was required to host a party in honor of her candidacy; Coronel held hers on Three Kings Day. On the day of the party, Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, whom she had met the previous year, entered the town accompanied by hundreds of armed men and publicly announced his intention to marry her. When Coronel won the contest, Guzmán appeared with three bands to celebrate her coronation. However, her reign as Coffee and Guava Queen proved brief, ending with her marriage to Guzmán, at which point the crown passed to the first runner-up.
Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán or Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera (/ˈɡuːzmɑːn/;[5] Spanish: [xoaˈkin aɾtʃiˈβaldo ɣuzˈman loˈeɾa]; born 4 April 1957) is a Mexican drug lord and former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, a criminal organization named after the Mexican Pacific coast state of Sinaloa where it was formed. He is known as "El Chapo" ("Shorty", pronounced [el ˈtʃapo]) because of his 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) stature. Guzmán became Mexico's top drug kingpin in 2003 after the arrest of his rival Osiel Cárdenas Guillén of the Gulf Cartel. He was considered the "most powerful drug trafficker in the world" by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
