Irina received international recognition in 2007 when she became the exclusive contracted face and made her first appearance. She was also the first Russian model that graced the cover in 2011 and Models.com ranks her at No. 8 in the world, for her social media following. Shayk made her acting debut as Megara alongside Dwayne Johnson in the 2014 film Hercules.

Shayk is helping a maternity hospital in her hometown of Yemanzhelinsk. She and her sister helped rebuild the children's ward of the local hospital, and now Shayk raises money on behalf of a Russian charity, Pomogi (Russian: Помоги), which provides care to sick children. Shayk is the official ambassador for Pomogi charity in Russia. Shayk has a pet dog named Caesare, after Julius Caesar, a Labrador which she claims was fathered by one of the dogs who played the title role in the film Marley & Me. Shayk was in a relationship with Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo from 2010 to 2015. Shayk began a relationship with actor Bradley Cooper the following month. In November Cooper moved into her apartment in New York's West Village. E! News reports that Irina and Bradley are expecting their first child.

For his work in these films, Cooper was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor (Silver Linings Playbook and American Sniper), and Best Supporting Actor (American Hustle). He also shared in the nomination of American Sniper for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Cooper became the tenth actor to receive an Academy Award nomination in three consecutive years. In 2014, he portrayed Joseph Merrick in a Broadway revival of The Elephant Man, garnering a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2015.
